Village Meet-Up in Strafford, Vermont
Tuesday, June 6, 2023

What if it really does take a village? Vermont’s rural villages have served as a model for sustainable living and community connections for generations. They define a sense of place and while they have experienced changes, Vermont’s small towns and villages are poised to welcome a new and exciting future. The day-long meet-up will focus on village revitalization, celebrating success, identifying challenges, and exploring solutions.

Join the Preservation Trust of Vermont and the Department of Housing and Community Development on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, for the first-ever “Village Meet-Up,” hosted by the Town of Strafford.

Morning Sessions

The Future is Rural
The most exciting models for community and economic development in Vermont are being developed and piloted in villages. A panel of rural community champions will discuss the innovative strategies they are employing to meet challenges and leverage assets. Specific strategies will include outdoor recreation, community supported enterprises, and repurposed community centers.

Tools for Village Revitalization
Want to revitalize your village but are unsure of where to begin? A panel of community leaders and funders will share examples of inventive programs that are reshaping the way we think about place and investment in Vermont’s villages.

Afternoon Sessions

The Strafford Story
The Justin Smith Morrill Homestead and the picturesque town green crowned by the Town House draw visitors to Strafford, but many other buildings tell the story of those who built and sustain the community. A local panel will share the work of residents, local government, and civic groups to create a vibrant town through citizen engagement with history, the arts, and community development.

New Systems for a New Future
The world has changed and so have the ways in which rural leaders are thinking about systems. A panel will focus on common issues for any community (housing, land ownership, placemaking) and the creative approaches leaders are taking to rethink the future of rural.

Sign up for local walking tours during check-in and attend a festive ice cream social with music on the Strafford Town Green to end the day!

The event will be held at the Strafford Town House. Sessions will run from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm with the ice cream social to follow. The cost including lunch is $25. Space is limited to 100 participants. Registration closes at 5 pm on Friday May 26th. Register soon!
