Bakersfield Historical Society, Bakersfield

The original portion of the building was constructed in 1840 as a three-story structure. The top two floors were home to the South Academy, with the first floor used as a church space for the Methodist congregation. In 1866 the lower level was transferred to Catholic parishioners and The Roman Catholic Diocese acquired complete ownership of the building in 1880. In 1902 renovation of the building began; the second floor was removed, the single-story chancel was added, and the current stained-glass windows were installed. The Historical Society took ownership of the building in 1994 and uses the space as a museum and community center. Funds will be used to replace the failed foundation and loose brick veneer of the 1908 one-story addition to the Historical Society Building.
