BONNIE ACKER, a lifelong artist and activist, has lived in Burlington since 1986.  She creates oil paintings, paper collages and fabric banners, and is immersed in numerous community-based food-and-farming adventures.

For over ten years she has been sharing food and gardening adventures with students, most recently at the Integrated Arts Academy in the Old North End in Burlington.  For twenty-two years she’s served on the Board of Directors of the Intervale Community Farm Cooperative.  And for twenty-three years she’s helped coordinate the flower gardens at City Market/Onion River Co-op and at the Fletcher Free Library.

Bonnie’s artwork has been supporting many organizations including the Champlain Housing Trust, the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, the Intervale Center, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont, Preservation Trust of Vermont, the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation and Vermont FEED; and her work has been featured in many publications including Vermont Life Magazine, The Art of Lake Champlain, Champlain’s Lake Rediscovered, The Community Land Trust Reader and Legendary Locals of Burlington, Vermont.  In 2015 she was one of thirteen artists featured at the Shelburne Museum’s Eyes On The Land exhibit highlighting the achievements of the Vermont Land Trust.

She has received many awards including those from the Burlington School Board, the City of Burlington, the Governor of Vermont, NOFA-Vermont, the Onion River Co-op, St Michael’s College and the University of Vermont.  She was named a Burlington Community Treasure by the City of Burlington on Bonnie Acker Day on 4 November 2013 and given the City’s Community Arts Award in 2015.

Bonnie was born in Philadelphia in 1948, attended the Miquon School and Germantown Friends School, and is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College; she enjoyed further studies at the Massachusetts College of Art.
